What is an ADU?

An Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) is a self-contained, secondary housing unit located on the same lot as an existing single-family home. Often called granny flats, in-law suites, or backyard cottages, they are legal, independent living spaces that include a kitchen, bathroom, and living area. ADUs can be detached structures, attached additions, or interior conversions.
